Advanced Catalyst Technologies for Marine Engines

Marine engines need emissions technologies that can perform under changing temperatures, loads, fuel conditions, and exhaust environments.

Technologies Developed to Address Methane Slip and Diesel Engine Emissions

CDTi develops catalyst technologies for LNG fueled and diesel marine engines. Our marine capabilities include methane abatement technology for large dual fuel engines and Fuel Borne Catalyst technology for diesel engines with Diesel Particulate Filter systems.

Reducing Methane Slip From Dual Fuel Marine Engines

LNG fueled dual fuel engines can release unburned methane through the exhaust. This is known as methane slip.
CDTi developed a lean methane oxidation catalyst for large dual fuel marine engines. The passive catalyst is placed within the exhaust flow and is designed to operate at typical exhaust temperatures of 300°C to 500°C.
During development, our team used synthetic gas to simulate exhaust conditions across five ISO 8178 operating points. Catalyst performance was evaluated at different temperatures, space velocities and PGM loadings.
The testing process also looked beyond the performance of a new catalyst. Accelerated aging was used to simulate extended service, while sulfur dioxide exposure helped our team evaluate the effects of sulfur poisoning.
The study demonstrated the potential of CDTi’s methane oxidation catalyst to reduce methane slip from dual fuel marine engines.

Managing Sulfur Before It Reaches the Catalyst

Sulfur can deactivate the precious metals within a methane oxidation catalyst. As sulfur builds up, the catalyst becomes less effective at converting methane.
CDTi’s two stage methane abatement system addresses sulfur before it reaches the methane oxidation catalyst.
01

Sulfur Adsorber

Exhaust first passes through CDTi’s proprietary sulfur adsorber. Sulfur compounds are captured within the adsorber before they can reach the methane oxidation catalyst.

02

Methane Oxidation Catalyst

The exhaust then passes through the methane oxidation catalyst, where methane is converted into water and carbon dioxide.

The system is designed for use in new projects and retrofit applications, including LNG fueled marine engines.

Fuel Borne Catalyst
Technology for Diesel Marine Engines

For diesel marine engines fitted with Diesel Particulate Filter systems, CDTi offers Platinum Plus®.

Platinum Plus® is a premium Fuel Borne Catalyst that is added directly to diesel fuel. It has been used and tested around the world for more than 20 years, including in marine engine applications.
The catalyst supports more complete combustion and reduces engine out soot entering the filter. It also lowers the temperature required for Diesel Particulate Filter regeneration, which can reduce the risk of filter blockage or damage.
Platinum Plus® is available in several formulations and packaging options. CDTi can also develop custom Fuel Borne Catalyst formulations based on the requirements of the application.

Catalyst Development and Testing Under One Roof

Our marine engine work is supported by CDTi’s catalyst development, analytical testing, and coating capabilities. Bringing these capabilities together allows our technical team to formulate materials, evaluate performance, study durability, and refine the catalyst before moving into production support.
Capabilities include:

Catalyst Formulation

Develop and refine catalyst materials based on the reaction and performance requirements of the application.

Material Characterization

Evaluate catalyst composition, crystallographic structure, surface area, particle size and thermal response.

Performance Testing

Use flow reactor testing to measure catalytic activity under controlled conditions.

Aging and Durability Testing

Study how temperature, extended operation, contamination, and catalyst poisoning can affect performance over time.

Coating and Production Support

Develop coating processes and support the move from initial development to production.
